Washington & New York by Axel H.

Saturday morning, after waking up in the Ruther Glen Quality Inn Motel, we set of for Washington.
Highways are becoming really impressive. 3 – 4 or even 5 lanes in every direction.
It’s surprisingly easy to access Washington by car, it’s even easy to find a parking space.

We saw the White House – which looks much much bigger on TV. It’s heavily guarded by the uniformed division of the secret service. Awesome !
In the park we met Squirty the Squirrel, the unofficial genitor of the White House.
He can be bribed with acorns and Belgian chocolate.

We had a coffee at a COSI-shop. Sticky tables, funny people drinking their morning coffees in night gown and pyjamas. Nice pepper and salt trays though …

After a stroll through the main street we’re off to New York.
We arrive there at about 7 PM at our Econolodge Inn in Carlstadt, a place that Manu knows since his childhood. It’s the place where he uses to meet some Tony Soprano from New Jersey.

We ate an enormous pizza at Bella Pizza, and decided to retire early.

Sunday New York on the program : after breakfast we went to the island.
Of course we had to pass the large toll bridge. But what a view !

We parked the car at the General Grant Memorial, because it’s not easy to drive a car in the Big Apple, being a foreigner.
We took a yellow cab into the heart of the city.
Dropping off at the Solomon Guggenheimer Museum, we got into the museum. Rather nice, though the largest part of the museum’s artwork is not visible to the public. We saw the Tannhauser collection, and a part of an American artist who used scrap car parts for his artwork. I think I even noticed ’67 fastback parts in it …

After that we strolled along Central Park to Battery Park. From there a ferry sets off to Ellis Island, where the beautiful present of the French to the US can be admired.

And afterwards Times Square by night, the Hard Rock Café …
